Aug. 31 20

The day was mostly cloudy with puffy cumulus clouds. The air was a little drier than yesterday but still very humid and hot through my travels through Montrose and the Memorial City area. Still very hot and humid on my way back home from getting 7 teeth pulled during the early evening. The night was hazy, very warm, and humid. No rain for the Houston, TX area that I know. Houston, TX had a 30% chance for rain.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX
1153 PM CDT Mon Aug 31 2020

.AVIATION [06Z TAF Issuance]...

Conditions should remain VFR through the majority of the TAF
period with moderate southerly winds expected to continue. As
we`ve seen over the past couple of days, forecast soundings
continue to indicate a brief drop to MVFR cigs around 09-11Z
across the northern sites. Otherwise, the main forecast concern
will be gusty winds tomorrow, with most sites seeing sustained
speeds climb to around 15 knots with gusts of up to 25 knots
Precipitation chances will be lower as an influx of drier air
pushes onshore.

PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 331 PM CDT Mon Aug 31 2020/

SHORT TERM [Through Wednesday Night]...
The thermostat for southeast Texas was cranked to the max today as
heat index values climbed to near 110 degrees across the area with
coastal areas getting into the mid 110s. Unfortunately, shower
activity this afternoon was very isolated and when they did form
they didn`t last long, so there was not much relief from the heat.
Temperatures tonight will only drop into low to mid 80s, and heat
indices will likely not drop out of the 90s for much of area (and
even higher along the coast). September will start out just as
August ended as another heat advisory has been issued across the
area tomorrow. Heat indices will yet again climb to near 110 across
the area tomorrow. Please continue to follow heat safety: stay
hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and look before you lock your
vehicle. There will be some drier air tomorrow that may be able to
mix down and bring some relief to the humidity, but this also means
that there will be less of a chance for showers to form.

A boundary approaches from the northwest overnight Tuesday into
Wednesday morning, but most guidance keep precipitation out of our
region Tuesday night. However, showers or thunderstorms may be able
to get far enough southeast to get into Houston, Madison, or Brazos
counties Tuesday night.

LONG TERM [Thursday Through Monday]...
Didn`t change all that much to the ongoing fcst in this time
period. 12z model runs generally support upper trof dipping a bit
further south into ncntl Tx than what was depicted on previous
days 12z runs. The associated weak surface frontal boundary and
moisture pooling would sag closer, or into, portions of the area
as we head into the late week time period. Sfc boundary and
disturbances riding under the southern parts of the trof should
allow for an increased chance of shra & tstms. Confidence in
timing/location/coverage isn`t overly high at this point, and
could eventually become mesoscale or outflow driven, but kept with
the mention of sct coverage for now. Some guidance is higher at
times & some lower.

Front should eventually washout somewhere near the area late in
the weekend with the first part of the week being somewhat of a
transition period before what currently appears might be our
first legitimate cold frontal passage around the 9th. 47

MARINE...
South winds and building seas are expected into midweek. Have
hoisted a SCA tonight for the far offshore waters and SCEC`s
nearshore and bays. Combination of both can be expected into
midweek before the gradient relaxes and conditions begin to
settle. Winds will back to the east this weekend as the northern
periphery of an easterly wave passes across. Other than iso/sct
precip, do not anticipate significant impacts. 47

Climate...
We will have to watch for quite a few record high minimum
temperatures for today. College Station this morning only got down
to 80 degrees, beating their old daily high min of 79 set back in
2012. Houston-Hobby and the City of Houston both only got down to
83 degrees, which ties the all time record high min for any date
for these two sites (6/23/2019 and 6/29/2020, respectively). The
City of Galveston only got down to 87 degrees this morning, which
beats the previous all time record high min for any date of 86
degrees. This was last set yesterday. Will need to monitor the
temperatures at these sites through 1am tonight (which is 12am
CST) before these become official. Daily record high mins are also
again possible tomorrow.
